The Hunger Games (Hardcover)

The Hunger Games

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. SignatureReviewed by Megan Whalen TurnerIf there really are only seven original plots in the world, it’s odd that boy meets girl is always mentioned, and society goes bad and attacks the good guy never is. Yet we have Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, The House of the Scorpion—and now, following a long tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn’t tied her future to a specific date, or weighted it down with too much finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is a gripping story set in a postapocalyptic world where a replacement for the United States demands a tribute from each of its territories: two children to be used as gladiators in a televised fight to the death.Katniss, from what was once Appalachia, offers to take the place of her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she is entirely focused on survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes th … >>> Save Money at Amazon.com

Zoombinis Logical Journey

Zoombinis Logical Journey

Zoombinis Logical Journey

Cheap, Still enjoyable as an adult,I first played this game when I was in elementary school in the 90’s. I remembered this game very fondly and decided to order this last year (I’m in college now)! After spending a long time playing it again and enjoying all the puzzles, I would say that this is one of the best children’s software programs I’ve ever played. It was just as fun as I remembered (my favorite ones are the pizza and frog/lilypad encounters). The puzzles exercise your reasoning and the difficulty setting allows for a challenge. The only downside to this game is its replay value, although again, the higher difficulty allows for more playability after the first few rounds. To be honest, I’ve never ran the zoombinis to their destination more than a few times so I’m not sure if there is an ending, but they look pretty happy in their new village.

Travel to a remarkable new world and treat your brain to an outlandishly fun and challenging adventure. Diabolical Bloats have seized Zoombini Isle, and it will take a clever mind to help the Zoombinis navigate their way to safety. Standing between you and your destination are twelve perilous puzzles, with four levels of difficulty each. But beware, this is no ordinary challenge. Zoombinis’ captivating gameplay features math without numbers. Solving Zoombinis puzzles uses the process of mathematical thinking. This process includes organizing information, reasoning with evidence, and testing systematically. Dive into the exciting and wacky world of the Zoombinis and develop information-age logic skills used in writing computer programs, organizing spreadsheet data, and searching for information on computer networks.
